Keynote address

"Appropriating the Kingdom of God: Jonathan Edwards and Historical Hermeneutics"

The Scriptural language of the Kingdom of God has the capacity to shape expectations of the church as well as of the state in powerful yet not always precise ways. We need examples of wise Christian leaders from the past like Jonathan Edwards, pastor and revivalist of eighteenth-century America, to interrogate how we use this category to cast a vision today

Rev. Dr. Rhys Bezzant

Rhys S. Bezzant is Principal and Senior Lecturer in Church History at Ridley College. Ordained as an Anglican minister in Melbourne, he has worked in university and parish settings, and is Director of the Jonathan Edwards Center Australia and Visiting Fellow at the Yale Divinity School. He has published Jonathan Edwards and the Church (OUP, 2014), Standing on Their Shoulders (Acorn, 2015), Edwards the Mentor (OUP, 2019), and has translated Martin Luther: A Late Medieval Life (Baker, 2017) and Francis of Assisi: Life of a Restless Saint (YUP, 2025). He also serves as Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne, and is a member of the Liturgy and Doctrine Commissions of the General Synod.

Call for papers

The Evangelical History Association of Australia is pleased to call for papers to be presented at its forthcoming conference, ‘Evangelicals and the Kingdom of God.’

This conference invites papers examining evangelical understandings and expressions of the Kingdom of God across time and place. Contributions may explore how the language and the theology of the Kingdom of God have shaped evangelical preaching, piety, mission, revival, and reform movements, as well as debates over eschatology, political engagement, and social action. Case studies of key figures, movements, or organisations are welcome, as are comparative and global perspectives that illuminate the diversity and development of evangelical approaches to the Kingdom of God. Papers are also invited that examine the themes of the Kingdom of God from an Australian
evangelical perspective.

We welcome papers of 20 minutes in length that engage with the conference theme.

Papers will be welcomed for submission to the EHA’s peer-reviewed journal, Lucas: An Evangelical Review.
